Covid-19 Victoria: No new local virus cases, close contacts released

The state’s health department announced zero new local cases about 8.30am in an astonishing sign the Delta outbreak has been quashed, as Victoria emerges from its fifth lockdown. Chief health officer Brett sutton celebrated the milestone by tweeting an image of Aussie Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus’ coach Dean Boxall’s viral celebration after she won gold. Just 3000 of more than 20,000 primary close contacts from the state’s latest outbreak remain in isolation as hundreds are freed back into the community each day. It beat the previous record of 5.6 million on July 15, which was just before the state’s fifth Covid-19 lockdown. No new cases were recorded in hotel quarantine, with the number for active infections in the state falling to 99 – down from 124 on Tuesday.
